The Loggia of Giulio Romano (Pescherie)
Built
around 1536, the project being by Giulio Romano, the Pescherie (the fish market) are structured in a double ashlar-work
portico with round arches, built over the Rio (a depleting
channel of the town, running between the Lago Superiore and
the Lago Inferiore). Over the arches there is a penthouse,
ashlar-worked as well, where windows framed by pilasters are
inserted. The buildings, originally intended as a fish
market (amply restored around the end of the XIX century),
were connected with the so-called Beccherie,
a public slaughterhouse which was built in the same period,
the project also being by Giulio Romano, but was demolished
around the first half of the nineteenth century.
