Spectacle, as we want to research it, is conceived in its widest sense: not only theatre in the strict sense of the word (court theatre, Commedia dell’Arte, opera, Jewish theatre), but also all the events implying a staging: from the sumptuous nuptial banquets with entertainments by actors, dancers and musicians, to triumphal entrances, funeral celebrations, carnival masquerades, tournaments.
These shouldn't be necessarily great spectacular events: seemingly minor names, for instance those of the intermediaries between the Gonzaga and actors or musicians, frequently prove to be major links in the reconstruction of showmen’s activities.
A remarkable variety of sources corresponds to the multiplicity of the events here explored: printed volumes of the staged plays, chronicles by envoys coming from other courts, the bills of craftsmen engaged in building scenery, notarial deeds, useful for reconstructing the artists’ lives; above all an extremely large correspondence (between the court and actors, but some letters also come from academicians, writers, architects, musicians, foreign sovereigns) providing information on spectacular events in a wide sense.
