A PRESENTATION OF THE DOCUMENTARY
ARCHIVE
Herla is the computer archive created by Mantova Capitale Europea dello Spettacolo in order to search information about spectacular activities in the age of the Gonzaga in Italian and European locations visited by actors connected with the Mantuan Court.
The form includes four fields:
- titolo (title) of the document (usually the incipit and the author) and its archival description: place, date, original location (the town, archive and collection holding the original document), state of preservation, language, etc.
- abstract summarizing the content, with possible notes
- parole chiave (keywords) divided into five fields: parole generiche (generic words), comici (actors), persone notevoli (noteworthy personalities), luoghi (places), opere citate
(cited works)
- categorie, search categories
From the user’s point of view, the most important part of the program is the search form: this can be activated typing in words to be searched in single fields, using a multiple term mode, or choosing the categories the user is interested in. Herla furnishes the list of documents containing the terms, or related to the categories searched; from such list the detailed information included in each data file can be obtained. The file accounts for the part of the document that is considered relevant to the history of the Theatre and Spectacular Performance.
The search tools in this web site provide only part of the data included in
Herla. The entire archive will be available at the Foundation offices, which will be open to the general public at an advanced stage in the project. Beside the above-mentioned fields, the complete file includes an archival description, the reference to any enclosed documents o data, the source and the original call number of the document.
